MSAI-Core Arts

Core Arts participants receive wide-ranging and intensive instruction in a variety of art forms. MSAI courses offer a tremendous opportunity for individual instruction, with a teacher-student ratio of approximately 1:10.
Core Arts exists to promote the artistic and creative abilities of individuals. Opportunities to take dance, vocal and instrumental music, visual and literary arts, and acting classes are offered in a six-period per day format. Core Arts aims to create a space in which people can realize their dreams and unleash their imagination to discover and develop their talents.

MUSIC

STRINGS:
This class will be an introduction to basic string technique using the violin. Violins can be provided for use during camp.

Strings II:
This class is open to any individual with string experience who would like to have more in-depth instruction on their individual string instrument: violin, viola, cello or bass. Students will bring their own instrument.

Steel Band:
This class will be an introduction to basic steel band technique and literature. Students will work on music in the traditional calypso style, as well as some pop music. Prerequisite for taking this class is the ability to read music.

Jazz Band:
This class is open to any instrumental player interested in the study of jazz styles, improvisation, chord construction, history of jazz and the composers of jazz.

Individual Instrumental:
This class is open to any instrumental player interested in gaining private instruction toward improving technique and repertoire in brass, woodwind, strings and percussion.

Show Choir:
This class is open to any student interested in an organized musical ensemble. It involves group and solo singing with choreographed and staged dance/movement to enhance the performance of the musical arrangements.

A Cappella Group:
Students will learn about contemporary style group singing in a fun, creative atmosphere. With NO instruments, they will learn how to create a sound that is infectious, fun and challenging. With the popularity of college a cappella groups on the rise around the country, this is a great way to get a jump start on the genre.


DANCE

Beginner Ballet:
This class will focus on the beginner ballet dancer with emphasis on stretch, balance and strength. Dancers that participate in this class will learn proper technique and terminology for turns, jumps, leaps and basic ballet movements.

Advanced Ballet:
This class will focus on the more advanced ballet dancer with emphasis on higher jumps, double and triple pirouette turns and more advanced and quicker ballet movements. The class will do a series of across the floor combinations, turn sequences and center work that will emphasize strength and endurance. Dancers that participate in this class will learn proper technique and terminology of more advanced movements, turns, extensions, jumps and leaps.

Jazz Technique-Beginner level:
This class is an up-beat, non-stop jazz class. Dancers that participate in this class will learn basic to intermediate level jazz sequences that are high-energy and non-stop to today’s hottest music hits. This class will also learn numerous jazz turns, leaps and jumps as well as isolated movements. This class was designed to be fun, high-energy and sure to make you sweat.

MODERN TECHNIQUE

Yoga:
Students will learn basic body poses and breathing techniques from the ancient practice of vinyasa, or flow yoga. Each pose will seamlessly blend into the next one, giving students equal challenges of body control, muscular accomplishment and mindful, patient concentration.

THEATRE

Introduction To Acting:
This class is ideally suited for students with little or no acting experience. We will use improvisation exercises and drama games to build self-confidence, increase self-awareness and instill collaborative trust.

Acting II:
This class will further develop the skills of the student/actor who is interested in working toward a career in the performing arts.

Improv:
This class is for actors and non-actors alike. Improvisation is both the easiest and most difficult type of performance known to man. It’s easy because it requires nothing more than imagination, a good ear and fearlessness; it’s difficult because as soon as most of us stand in front of a group of people those things fly right out the window. The goal of this class will be to give students both the confidence and the freedom to fail.

Shakespeare:
This class will introduce students to Shakespeare’s body of works and develop action techniques as they discover the challenges of Shakespeare in performance.

Acting For Camera:
Designed for both novice and moderately experienced performers, this class will give students ample time to perform in front of the camera. We will film students using real television commercial scripts and short scenes in every class, and then we will review and critique the performances.

Stage Movement:
This class will provide practical application of the techniques used in the choreography of stage combat, including unarmed combat techniques and various styles of weaponry.


LITERAL ARTS

Story Telling:
This class will include the art of speaking; the Delta storytelling tradition; the place speaking has in marketing your writing; telling your stories; the mechanics of presentations; and selling talking.

Narrative:
This class includes writing your own story; the value of family history; the catharsis of writing your experiences; oral history; “creative non-fiction”; marketing your writing; and helping others.

Business Of Writing:
This class includes not only techniques of writing, but how to sell your writing in newspaper and magazine markets; book publishing; self-publishing and selling your own books; internet markets; and agents.

Poetry:
This class will introduce students to various forms of poetry. Students will be encouraged to express themselves artistically through both the written and spoken word.

VISUAL ARTS

CRAFT I:

Drawing I:
This class will introduce students to the beginning techniques of drawing in graphite. Basic techniques will include line drawing, shading, stipple and contour techniques. Instruction will include the use of different types of paper.

Drawing II:
This class will further develop the basic skills of students with previous classroom drawing experience and provide exploration with different media. Subject matter and themes and the introduction of meaning and content in drawing will also be developed.

Cartooning:
This class will introduce a variety of cartooning styles and techniques while learning basic drawing techniques to create a personal comic strip character or superhero. Students will learn how to develop a character(s) and story for a series of comic strips, a comic booklet, or a poster design.

Mask Making:
This class will teach students how to create masks and produce features upon the face of the mask using a variety of materials and techniques. Students will also paint and decorate the mask using a variety of mediums.

Pottery:

Watercolor I:
This class will provide instruction about watercolor paint, the type of brushes used and the different types of paper required for watercolor. Included in the instruction will be the watercolor techniques of dry brush, wet into wet and washes.

Watercolor II:
This class will include all the instruction in Watercolor I and will go beyond techniques to cover critical thinking, basic design and critical analysis.

Oil Painting:
This class will provide instruction in the use of oil paint and different surfaces that oil paint could be applied to such as canvas, paper and some types of board and masonite. Instruction will include oil painting techniques.
